Annual wellness visits are crucial for patients to maintain their overall health and detect any medical issues early on. These visits provide an opportunity for doctors to assess a patient's current health status, discuss any concerns or changes in health, and conduct various screenings and exams aimed at detecting diseases and conditions in their early stages when they are most treatable.

During an annual wellness visit, a doctor may order a range of exams and tests depending on the patient's age, gender, medical history, and risk factors. Some of the basic exams and screenings that may be conducted include:

  • Lab Work: Blood tests to evaluate organ function, such as liver and kidney function, cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels (for diabetes screening), and complete blood count (CBC) to check for anemia or infection.
  • Colon Cancer Screening: Tests such as colonoscopy, Cologuard fecal test, fecal occult blood test (FOBT), or fecal immunochemical test (FIT) to detect colon cancer or precancerous polyps.
  • Cervical Cancer Screening: Pap smear or HPV (human papillomavirus) test to screen for cervical cancer or detect HPV infections that can lead to cervical cancer.
  • Breast Cancer Screening: Mammogram to detect breast cancer in its early stages, especially for women over 40 or those with a family history of breast cancer.
  • Lung Cancer Screening: Low-dose CT scan for individuals at high risk of lung cancer due to smoking history or other risk factors.
  • Prostate Cancer Screening: Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test for men to screen for prostate cancer, particularly for those at higher risk or with symptoms.
  • Bone Density Test: DEXA scan to assess bone health and screen for osteoporosis, especially in postmenopausal women or those with risk factors.
  • Blood Pressure Measurement: Regular monitoring of blood pressure to detect hypertension or prehypertension, which can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) Assessment: Evaluation of weight and body composition to assess the risk of obesity-related conditions such as diabetes,  and heart disease.
  • Vision Tests: Screening for vision loss and eye diseases, which can impact overall quality of life and may indicate underlying health issues.

By attending annual wellness visits and undergoing these screenings and exams, patients can work together with their healthcare providers to maintain good health, detect diseases early, and take early steps to manage or prevent them. Finding medical problems early will increase the success of treatment and lead to better results.
