Grant Writer’s book tells of life in Hoopa

K’ima:w Medical Center’s Grant Writer Judith Hailey Surber recently lectured for the Native American Study program at UC Davis.

Surber resides on the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation with her husband, Gordon, where they have raised their four children and grandchildren.  A member of the Hoopa Tribe, Judith has worked for her Tribe throughout her adult life in many different positions and presently is employed at K’ima:w Medical Center as a Grant Writer.

Although Judith has been employed as the Executive Secretary for the Tribe, DV advocate/coordinator and grant writer, her passion is creative writing and she writes about issues that affect Native people.  Coming from a long line of storytellers she believes that stories can be used in the context of teaching values and lessons. Although “Reservation High” is her first book published, she is currently working on two other novels as well as doing a joint project with her mom recording Indian stories and history of their Tribe.
